What is Fluoroscopy?

Fluoroscopy is a medical imaging procedure that helps doctors get real-time, detailed images of the internal workings of the body, including the skeletal, digestive, urinary, respiratory, and reproductive systems, thanks to the use of X-ray technology. This valuable technique allows healthcare specialists to both diagnose and treat numerous health conditions.

Understanding the process

Upon arrival, you'll be guided by clinical staff who will help you through the entire procedure.

You are then positioned on the imaging table, where a continuous X-ray beam is passed through your body to a monitor. As a result of this process, the radiologist can view a detailed and live internal image of the area being examined. To make the examination more effective and ensure the images are clear, you may sometimes be asked to change position.

Why might you need a Fluoroscopy procedure?

These procedures can help identify problems such as ulcers, tumours, or certain injuries. It's also used during procedures like angiograms, certain biopsies, spinal injections, and even during certain surgeries to navigate vessels and organs.

The scan is used across a number of specialities including:

• Gastrointestinal
• Urology
• Angiography
• Insertion of a peripherally inserted central catheter e.g. PICC Line, Hickman Line
• Musculoskeletal Joint Injections

How to prepare for a Fluoroscopy procedure?

Preparation depends largely on the type of procedure you'll be having. Generally, you might be asked to fast for a few hours or to stop taking certain medications. Always make sure to discuss any concerns or questions you might have with your doctor, and they'll provide all the necessary instructions suited for your specific procedure.
